Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt attended the official press event in Venice for their new film, ‘The Smashing Machine,’ directed by Benny Safdie in his first solo directorial effort. The film follows the career of MMA fighter Mark Kerr, portrayed by Johnson, during the 1990s no-holds-barred era of the UFC. It explores his personal struggles and the challenges in his relationship with his girlfriend Dawn Staples, played by Blunt. Safdie explained that the 1990s were a unique period for mixed martial arts, characterized by experimentation and a close-knit fighter community. Johnson discussed his desire to push beyond his established Hollywood image and take on more complex roles, highlighting the importance of collaborating with respected peers like Blunt and Safdie. Blunt emphasized the authenticity and depth of her character, reflecting the intense and sometimes hazardous dynamics of life with a professional fighter.
