Snoop Dogg Responds to Controversy Over LGBTQ+ Representation in ‘Lightyear’

Rapper Snoop Dogg has addressed criticism regarding his reaction to a same-sex couple in the 2022 animated film ‘Lightyear’. The controversy arose after Snoop recounted taking his grandson to see the movie and being surprised by a scene showing a female character in a same-sex marriage. He expressed that he was unprepared to answer questions from his young grandson and admitted his uncertainty publicly, writing, ‘My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old … teach me how to learn I’m not perfect.’ His comments were criticized online, with many accusing him of being homophobic. In response, Lightyear writer Lauren Gunderson explained that including a queer couple was intentional and meaningful, even if brief, highlighting the importance of representation in media. The inclusion of the scene led to the film being banned in several countries and drew criticism from some U.S. political figures. Snoop emphasized that his remarks were a reflection of being caught off guard rather than personal prejudice and acknowledged support from his LGBTQ+ friends. The rapper’s apology attempts to clarify his position amid the public debate over representation in children’s films.
