‘Superman’ Leads Box Office in Second Weekend, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Opens Strong

The DC reboot, ‘Superman,’ continues to dominate the box office in its second weekend, earning $16.6 million on Friday, pushing its domestic total to $194.4 million. Despite a 50% drop from its opening weekend, the film has shown staying power compared to similar superhero releases. Directed by James Gunn, ‘Superman’ is expected to reach $235 million by the end of its first 10 days. New releases such as ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ and ‘Smurfs’ are competing for attention, with the former earning $5.8 million on its opening day, slightly below expectations. The ‘I Know What You Did’ sequel, which features original stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, is looking at a debut of over $13 million. Meanwhile, the animated ‘Smurfs’ movie grossed $4 million on its opening day, with a three-day total projection of $12 million, which would be a disappointing result given its $58 million production budget. Other films, including ‘Eddington’ and ‘Jurassic World Rebirth,’ also contributed to the weekend box office figures. ‘Eddington,’ a period piece directed by Ari Aster, had a subdued opening, grossing $1.8 million on its first day, and is projected to earn around $5 million over the weekend.
