Documentary Sheds Light on the Human Rights Issues Behind Tribal Disenrollment

Ryan Flynn’s documentary ‘You’re No Indian’ explores the controversial and often hidden practice of tribal disenrollment, where over 11,000 Native Americans have been stripped of their tribal membership. These actions are often driven by the financial interests of tribal casinos, political maneuvering, and personal vendettas. The film highlights how disenrolled individuals lose their identity, rights, and community ties. In some cases, the process is carried out without legal protections, targeting vulnerable members and even their families. Flynn spent seven years on the documentary, earning the trust of disenrolled tribal members, some of whom faced retaliation for speaking out. Flynn states that the disenrollment trend is spreading rapidly across Indigenous communities in the U.S. and is essentially a civil war happening under the radar. In the film, Indigenous actors Wes Studi and Tantoo Cardinal also executive produce, offering their support to raise awareness about this injustice. Despite facing difficulties with film festivals, including a last-minute removal from the 2025 Palm Springs Film Festival, ‘You’re No Indian’ will be showcased at the Dances With Films Festival, sending a powerful message against the system of tribal disenrollment.
