AI Enhances ‘Wizard of Oz’ for Immersive Sphere Experience

Starting on August 28, 2025, the iconic movie ‘The Wizard of Oz’ will be showcased on Sphere’s 160,000 square-foot LED screen in Las Vegas, but not just in its traditional form. A 2,000-person team is reworking the film with cutting-edge AI technology. The aim is to both upscale the movie’s resolution and expand the content beyond its original framing. The film’s visuals will be enhanced with AI techniques like outpainting, which extends scenes, revealing previously unseen parts of the movie’s world, such as the full Scarecrow and the Yellow Brick Road. This effort also includes restoring grainy footage to highly detailed visuals. According to Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan, the goal is not to alter the essence of the film but to immerse viewers as if they were physically present during its original production. The project offers a unique opportunity for audiences to experience ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in a whole new way, leveraging AI to push the boundaries of traditional cinematic presentation.
