President Ruto Highlights Support for Kenyan Creative Industry at Kalasha Awards

President William Ruto attended the 14th Kalasha Awards at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, showing his support for Kenya’s creative sector. Dressed sharply in a black tuxedo with a fedora and a walking stick, he emphasised that the creative economy is central to his government’s transformation agenda. Ruto highlighted that a State Department for the Creative Economy has been established, and a new Creative Economy Office at State House will soon appoint officials including a Director of Gaming, Secretary for Film Services, and Head of Music and Fashion. He encouraged Parliament to fast-track the Creative Economy Bill 2026 to strengthen copyright laws, ensuring Kenyan artistes are protected and rewarded. The president also revealed his personal interests, saying he enjoys watching the Kenyan series Njoro Wa Uba, praising actor Joe Kinyua for depicting everyday struggles, and that he listens to Bien’s hit song Finale featuring Ali Kiba. Additionally, he noted that the government plans to direct 30% of advertising spending to local creative platforms. Ruto congratulated all winners at the awards and hinted that State House may host next year’s ceremony, showing commitment to growing Kenya’s creative talent.
