Jesse Armstrong, renowned for creating the critically acclaimed series ‘Succession’, returns with a new project: a satire film titled ‘Mountainhead’. Speaking at the Hay Festival, Armstrong revealed that the film was inspired by his interest in power structures and tech culture. ‘Mountainhead’ follows four tech billionaires at a mountain resort as their world begins to unravel amidst global unrest, reflecting current anxieties surrounding technology and AI. The film was produced quickly to mirror the rapid pace of societal change—pitched in December, written in January, and shot in just 22 days. Armstrong also directed it himself, marking his directorial debut. Drawing inspiration from podcasts featuring tech leaders like Elon Musk and Sam Altman, Armstrong explored the language and mindset of the tech elite. He described the project as both expressive and cathartic, especially regarding the male-dominated tech industry. Known for dark humor, Armstrong views himself primarily as a comedy writer, not a traditional storyteller. While he didn’t direct episodes of ‘Succession’ out of respect for its directors, he embraced the challenge for ‘Mountainhead’. The film airs on HBO and Max on May 31, aiming to provoke thought while keeping viewers engaged through humor and satire.
