Oby Kechere, Nollywood Actress and Director, Dies After Long Illness

Oby Kechere, a prominent Nollywood actress and film director, has sadly passed away after a prolonged illness. Kechere, who was famously known for her role as “Ms Koi Koi” in the 2002 comedy classic ‘Aki na Ukwa’, died on April 27, 2026. The news was confirmed by Uche Agbo, the National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), who expressed deep sorrow over her death. Oby Kechere was born in Mbaise, Imo State, and she grew up in a household of six, deeply influenced by Igbo cultural values that shaped her acting. A graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, she was well-versed in the craft and brought depth to her performances. Kechere made a major mark in Nollywood with her portrayal of Gladys in ‘Aki na Ukwa’, and went on to feature in numerous films over the years, including ‘Gone Forever’, ‘August Meeting’, and ‘Ononikpo Aku’. Beyond acting, she was also a film director and worked with the National Orientation Agency in Abuja. Her versatility and wide-ranging talents made her one of Nollywood’s most respected figures. Her sudden passing is a great loss to the industry and her fans, who will always remember her contributions to Nigerian cinema.
