Victoria Mahoney Takes the Helm for ‘The Old Guard 2’ as Director, Succeeding Gina Prince-Bythewood

Netflix has officially released ‘The Old Guard 2’, the sequel to its successful 2020 action film based on the comic by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández. The new installment is directed by Victoria Mahoney, who takes over from Gina Prince-Bythewood, the director of the original film. Prince-Bythewood remains involved as a producer, expressing confidence in Mahoney’s vision for the franchise. Mahoney, known for her work as second-unit director on ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ and for directing episodes of acclaimed TV series, becomes the first Black woman to direct a film in both the Star Wars universe and this franchise. ‘The Old Guard 2’ continues the story of Andromache of Scythia (Charlize Theron) and her team of immortal warriors, joined by Nile (KiKi Layne), as they face new threats and reckon with their centuries-old history. The sequel adapts the ‘Force Multiplied’ arc from the comics, focusing on the conflict with Andy’s former lover, Noriko, and exploring the burdens of immortality. Returning cast members include Theron, Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film was shot in various locations in Italy and the UK, with production wrapping in late 2023. With Mahoney’s direction, the sequel aims to build on the first film’s diverse cast, dynamic action, and genre innovation, while introducing new creative voices to the franchise.
