Director of The New Avengers Explains Early Death of Taskmaster for Narrative Impact

In a recent interview, director Jake Schreier discussed the controversial decision to kill off Taskmaster (played by Olga Kurylenko) early in *The New Avengers* (previously titled *Thunderbolts*). Taskmaster is abruptly killed in her first scene by Ava Starr/Ghost, a move that surprised many viewers but was hinted at through marketing inconsistencies and her absence from later trailers and cast reveals. Schreier explained that the film initially felt too ‘bloodless’ and lacked real tension, prompting the need for a shocking and meaningful death to raise the stakes among morally ambiguous characters. Although creating a new character just to be killed off was an option, Schreier felt Taskmaster’s established presence would make the moment more impactful.

The director acknowledged the difficulty of breaking the news to Kurylenko, who responded professionally despite her limited screen time. Co-writer Eric Pearson revealed that in earlier drafts, Taskmaster had a larger role and shared a developing connection with Ghost, as both had traumatic pasts of being controlled in laboratory settings. However, this subplot was removed to prioritize other narrative threads, particularly the dynamic between Yelena and Bob. Schreier emphasized that the timing of the death was key to maintaining tonal balance and emotional focus in the film.

While Taskmaster’s arc ends abruptly, the rest of the team continues to play central roles in the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday*.
