Veteran Actor and Producer Sudesh Kumar Passes Away at 95

Sudesh Kumar, renowned for his lead role in the 1961 tragic love story ‘Saranga’ and for producing notable thrillers like ‘Uljhan’, passed away at his Mumbai residence on Friday at the age of 95. He had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital earlier in the week due to breathing complications and was brought home upon his request, where he breathed his last. Born in 1931 in Peshawar, Sudesh moved to Bombay at a young age and completed his science degree from Elphinstone College. Though his father wished him to become a doctor, he pursued acting, joining Prithviraj Kapoor’s theatre group and appearing in early films such as ‘Paisa’ (1957). Sudesh gained popularity through supporting roles in films like ‘Chhoti Bahen’, ‘Bharosa’, and ‘Khandan’, and became a familiar face in southern social dramas. Notable among his work was the film ‘Aaj aur Kal’, where he played a young Congress leader. As a producer in the 1970s, he ventured into films like ‘Man Mandir’, ‘Uljhan’, and ‘Badalte Rishtey’. Married to Jaya Dhawan since 1982, he remained active and fit well into his 90s. His funeral took place at Shivaji Park Crematorium in Mumbai. Sudesh Kumar leaves behind a legacy as a versatile actor and thoughtful producer who bridged the worlds of classic Bollywood and meaningful cinema.
