Plans for Demolition of Argyle House, Featured in Netflix’s Dept Q Series

Plans have been submitted to the City of Edinburgh Council for the demolition of Argyle House, a brutalist 1960s building that served as the exterior location for the police headquarters in Netflix’s crime drama series Dept Q. The building, located near Edinburgh Castle, could be replaced by a mixed-use development that includes a hotel, residential properties, office space, and retail. Despite being criticized for its unattractive design, Argyle House has played a significant role in various productions, including its use as the Lothian Police headquarters in the ITV series Crime. The building is also home to tech workspace CodeBase, which remains unaffected by the proposed demolition for the next year due to a lease agreement. Public consultations for the proposal are scheduled for December 2025 and January 2026. The redevelopment is expected to bring significant change to the area. In addition to its place in Dept Q, the building was sold in 2023 for £38 million to PGIM Real Estate, a US-based firm. However, the future of CodeBase Edinburgh remains uncertain, depending on whether the redevelopment proceeds as planned.
