Jesse Armstrong Explores Tech Billionaire Culture in Directorial Debut ‘Mountainhead’

Jesse Armstrong, best known as the creator of the acclaimed series ‘Succession’, makes his directorial debut with the film ‘Mountainhead’, a satirical look at tech billionaires. The film, starring Steve Carell and Jason Schwartzman, revolves around a group of ultra-wealthy tech entrepreneurs who gather to compare fortunes while an international crisis—possibly of their own making—unfolds in the background. Armstrong explains that he poured his personal anxieties into the film and hopes it offers viewers a space to reflect on their own discomforts with the modern world.

Though the characters aren’t direct portrayals of real-life figures, Armstrong acknowledges borrowing traits from well-known tech moguls like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sam Altman. The script, written and produced in under six months, aims to tap into the public’s unease with the power and influence of big tech. Carell delivers many of the film’s punchlines, highlighting the absurdities and lack of self-awareness among the elite. Armstrong emphasizes that satire is his preferred medium for confronting serious issues, blending comedy and tragedy to mirror the complexity of real life. ‘Mountainhead’ premieres on 1 June on Sky and streaming service NOW.
