‘Lilo & Stitch’ Tops Memorial Day Box Office Ahead of ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ and ‘Mission: Impossible’

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Disney’s live-action remake of ‘Lilo & Stitch’ led the North American box office, grossing an impressive $182.6 million from 4,410 theaters, exceeding industry expectations. ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’, starring Tom Cruise, followed with $77 million from 3,857 venues. In contrast, Sony’s ‘Karate Kid: Legends’, the sixth installment in the franchise and the first since 2010, opened to a modest $20 million from 3,809 theaters, despite featuring both Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan. Earlier projections had anticipated a stronger $25–30 million debut.

‘Karate Kid: Legends’ introduces a new protagonist, played by Ben Wang, mentored by the legacy characters in a story focused on overcoming bullying through karate. The film had a production budget of $45 million, excluding marketing expenses. Its Thursday previews brought in $2.3 million. Meanwhile, ‘Lilo & Stitch’ is on track to reach a $277 million domestic total by Sunday. ‘Mission: Impossible’ could hit $122.6 million domestically with weekend estimates holding.

Horror titles also maintained strong positions: ‘Final Destination Bloodlines’ is projected to earn $10 million in its third weekend, bringing its total to $110.9 million, while A24’s ‘Bring Her Back’ is expected to close out the top 5 with $6–7 million. Final weekend numbers will be confirmed Monday.
