Guitar Used by Marty McFly in Back to the Future Missing for 40 Years, Stars Seek Public Help

The iconic Cherry Red Gibson ES-345 guitar, famously played by Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) in the 1985 film *Back to the Future*, has been missing for four decades. The guitar featured prominently in the memorable scene where McFly performs ‘Johnny B. Goode’ at a 1955 high school dance. As part of a new documentary titled *Lost To The Future*, Gibson—the instrument’s manufacturer based in Nashville, Texas—is appealing to the public to help locate the lost guitar.

Both Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, who played Doc Brown in the film, have made video appeals shared on the social media platform X. They humorously suggested the guitar may be lost in the “space-time continuum” or sitting in someone’s garage. The guitar was last seen in 1985 and hasn’t resurfaced despite efforts during the filming of the 1989 sequel to locate it.

The search is not just a nostalgic endeavor but part of a broader cultural effort to preserve significant movie memorabilia. Harry Waters Jr., who portrayed Marvin Berry in the film, confirmed the instrument’s last known appearance. The new documentary aims to rekindle public interest in this piece of film history and, hopefully, solve the mystery of its whereabouts.
