Wicked: For Good Trailer Previews Sequel’s Themes and New Music
The first full trailer for ‘Wicked: For Good’, the sequel to the Wizard of Oz spin-off film ‘Wicked’, has been released. The movie continues the story of Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, portrayed by Ariana Grande. Following their separation in the first installment, the sequel explores the consequences of their choices. Elphaba is now a fugitive, while Glinda serves as a public figure under the Wizard’s influence. The trailer includes dramatic scenes, including Glinda facing a hostile crowd and Elphaba declaring her journey to see the Wizard before flying off on a broomstick.
Director Jon M. Chu emphasized the emotional weight of the characters’ decisions and teased a more intense tone for the sequel. The films are based on the popular Broadway musical, itself adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel. The second movie is scheduled for release on 21 November, following a production period interrupted by the Hollywood actors’ strike. The first film was highly successful, topping UK box office charts in 2024 and winning two Oscars.
One challenge for the sequel is the absence of the musical’s most iconic songs, which featured in the first film. However, it will include two new songs written specifically to support the narrative. Returning cast members include Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, and Jeff Goldblum.
