In Memoriam: Remembering Cinematographer Ron Johanson, ACS (1949-2025)

Ron Johanson, a legendary Australian cinematographer and former president of the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS), passed away on June 28, 2025, at the age of 76. With a career spanning several decades, Johanson made significant contributions to both the Australian film industry and the ACS. He started in the industry as a messenger at 16, later progressing to lighting cameraman. He worked with Martin Williams Films and founded the Roly Poly Picture Co. in 1980, where he directed and filmed commercials, TV series, documentaries, and feature films. Among his notable works were Scott Hicks’ *Freedom* (1982) and Joseph Van Winkle’s *The Woman Inside* (1981). Johanson joined the ACS in 1992 and served in various leadership positions, including president for 14 years, where he played a crucial role in establishing the ACS’s national headquarters and guiding the publication of *The Shadowcatchers*, a history of cinematography in Australia. He was also instrumental in securing the ACS’s receipt of the Byron Kennedy Award. Johanson’s contributions were felt internationally, serving as a representative for Australia in Imago, the International Federation of Cinematographers, where he became co-president in 2021. His legacy extends beyond his cinematic work, influencing generations of filmmakers and inspiring a spirit of camaraderie within the cinematography community. He was inducted into the ACS Hall of Fame in 2005 and honored with lifetime membership in 2007. His awards include two Cannes Lions and four New York Festivals International Advertising Awards.
