Bollywood Legend Dharmendra Passes Away at 89; Modi and Fans Pay Tribute

Indian cinema mourns the loss of Dharmendra, the legendary actor who passed away at the age of 89, just days before his 90th birthday. Known as India’s ‘He-Man,’ Dharmendra was a defining figure in Bollywood during the 1970s and 1980s, celebrated for his charismatic performances, versatility, and on-screen heroism. He made his film debut in 1960 and gained immense popularity as both a romantic and action star. His collaboration with actress Hema Malini, with whom he appeared in over two dozen films and later married, became iconic in Indian cinema. Among his most memorable works are the blockbuster film ‘Sholay’ (1975), the romantic comedy ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1975), and the action drama ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’ (1971). Dharmendra also contributed as a producer and briefly ventured into politics, representing Rajasthan in the Indian parliament for the Bharatiya Janata Party from 2004 to 2009. Recognized with the Padma Bhushan in 2012 for his contributions to cinema, he leaves behind a rich legacy, survived by his wives, children, and grandchildren, including sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, and daughter Esha Deol.
