Dakota Johnson Opens Up About Early Career Struggles After Being Cut Off Financially

In a candid interview with Pedro Pascal for Elle UK, actress Dakota Johnson shared personal insights into the financial hardships she faced early in her career after being cut off by her father, actor Don Johnson. Dakota revealed that when she failed to get accepted into Juilliard, her father stopped financially supporting her, as attending college had been a condition. Without a backup plan or stable acting roles, Johnson began auditioning at 19, landing small jobs including a role in ‘The Social Network’.

She recounted difficult moments during those years, including not being able to pay rent or afford groceries, occasionally relying on her parents for help. Despite the tough times, she expressed gratitude for having family support when absolutely necessary. Johnson also described the Juilliard audition process as deeply stressful, reinforcing her lack of desire to attend college. Instead, she preferred a life shaped by exposure to diverse cultures and experiences, rather than a confined academic setting.

Johnson and Pascal will star alongside Chris Evans in the upcoming A24 film ‘Materialists’, directed by Celine Song, which is set to release in theaters on June 13.
