Cineworld Glasgow’s Renfrew Street Cinema Faces Potential Closure Due to Property Issues

Cineworld has notified employees at its landmark Glasgow city centre cinema that it could be at risk of closure. The cinema, located on Renfrew Street, is currently under threat as the building’s owners plan to take back the property. This could result in the cinema’s closure, as stated in an internal email sent to staff. The company clarified that this situation is beyond their control, but wanted to inform employees as early as possible. The cinema, which opened in 2001, is located on the site of the iconic Glasgow Apollo concert venue, demolished in 1987. The 200ft building, once the tallest cinema in the world, features 13 floors and 18 screens with seating for 4,300 people. Cineworld took over operations of the cinema after acquiring UGC Cinema’s UK and Ireland properties in 2005. Although the closure is not yet confirmed, Cineworld has stated they are working closely with employees affected by the situation. No further details have been shared by the company at this time, but they have acknowledged the uncertainty regarding the future of the cinema.
