Blumhouse Acquires Saw Franchise Rights, Reuniting James Wan and Leigh Whannell

Blumhouse has finalized its acquisition of Twisted Pictures’ stake in the Saw franchise, a move that repositions the series back under the creative leadership of James Wan and Leigh Whannell. This follows the merger between Wan’s Atomic Monster and Blumhouse last year. The rights transfer was negotiated by CAA Evolution, marking a significant shift in ownership for one of horror’s most lucrative film franchises, which has grossed over $1 billion globally. Lionsgate retains a 50% ownership stake and will continue to distribute future films, while Content Partners has acquired a stake in the existing Saw library.

Oren Koules and Mark Burg, who originally produced the franchise, are stepping away after two decades. Both expressed pride in the legacy they’ve built and optimism about the franchise’s future with its original creators. James Wan shared his enthusiasm for returning to the Saw universe, promising a fresh yet faithful approach. Jason Blum highlighted the cultural impact of the franchise and its strategic value to Blumhouse.

Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson also expressed confidence in the new team’s ability to carry on the Saw legacy. The move sets the stage for a creative resurgence for the horror series, potentially reinvigorating it with new vision and storytelling.
