Zootopia 2 Surpasses Inside Out 2 as Hollywood’s Highest-Grossing Animated Film with $1.7 Billion Worldwide

Disney’s Zootopia 2, released in November 2025, has officially become the highest-grossing animated film produced by a Hollywood studio, amassing $1.7 billion (£1.3 billion) at the global box office. This surpasses the previous record holder, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 from 2024, which earned $1.69 billion. The sequel, with an estimated production budget of $150 million, features the return of rabbit police officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and sly fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), who investigate a mysterious reptilian newcomer named Gary De’Snake (voiced by Ke Huy Quan). It achieved several milestones, including the biggest opening weekend for any animated film during the US Thanksgiving period and the fastest Hollywood animated title to reach $1 billion globally. The film now ranks as the ninth highest-grossing movie of all time overall, trailing behind blockbusters like Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, and Titanic. Despite this Hollywood milestone, the worldwide highest-grossing animated film remains China’s Ne Zha 2 from 2025, which earned $2.2 billion, primarily from the Chinese market. Disney executives, including co-chairman Alan Bergman, credited the success to global fans and the filmmakers’ efforts. The strong performance, particularly in international markets like China, highlights the continued appeal of the Zootopia franchise and animated sequels in general.
