Boosting Women Leadership in Tanzania’s Film Industry

In Tanzania, women are very visible in front of the camera, often leading storylines and marketing films, but behind the scenes in production and creative roles, their presence is very limited. Industry experts say this lack of women in leadership affects the perspectives and creativity in films. Producer Keffa Igilio explains that women bring attention to detail, better organization, and a fresh perspective that can improve film quality. Stakeholders like Winnie Nzunda and Evelyn Byaruhanga note that technical roles such as cinematography, sound engineering, and production management are still dominated by men, which discourages young women from pursuing such careers. They emphasize that storytelling should include women’s voices and leadership, as content creation is the backbone of the industry. At a policy level, Emmanuel Ndumukwa from the Tanzania Film Board highlights that when women tell their own stories, it leads to authenticity and societal lessons without bias.
