Michael Sheen Reveals Why He Initially Turned Down Tony Blair Role

Actor Michael Sheen shared the reasons why he initially rejected playing former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in the Channel 4 drama ‘The Deal’. Sheen, who later reprised the role in the films ‘The Queen’ (2006) and ‘The Special Relationship’ (2010), had already committed to another project — playing Emperor Caligula on stage. Despite this, Sheen eventually accepted both roles, balancing filming during the day and performing in the theatre at night, often travelling across London on a motorcycle to make it work. He recalled the exhaustion of the experience, but also the thrill of the journey. He fondly remembers rushing from one set to the other, with the physical transition from Tony Blair’s appearance to Caligula’s on-stage persona. Sheen’s account reveals not just his dedication to his craft, but also the serendipitous way the role came to him. He explained that while attending a play, a woman approached him and suggested he play Blair in a new drama, ‘The Deal’. Initially skeptical, Sheen turned it down, but later the logistics were worked out so he could take on both roles. The interview on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island Discs’ also touched on Sheen’s music tastes, which include songs from Ultravox, Talk Talk, and The Rolling Stones.
