Satyajit Ray Retrospective Showcased Across Cinemas in Japan

In a remarkable celebration of Satyajit Ray’s cinematic legacy, seven of his films were screened across multiple cities in Japan last year, marking their first theatrical release there. The retrospective included classics spanning two decades, such as ‘Jalsaghar’ (1958), ‘Mahanagar’ (1963), ‘Charulata’ (1964), ‘Kapurush’ (1965), ‘Mahapurush’ (1965), ‘Nayak’ (1966), and ‘Jai Baba Felunath’ (1979). Screenings began on 25th July at Le Cinema Bunkamura in Tokyo and expanded nationwide due to overwhelming demand, reaching cities like Hiroshima, Osaka, and Kyoto. The films were accompanied by talks and discussions that explored the cultural and musical contexts, including Rabindrasangeet in ‘Charulata’. Renowned Japanese figures, such as Akira Kurosawa, praised Ray’s work, and the distribution was facilitated by Toho-Towa Co. Ltd., influenced by Kashiko Kawakita, a long-time admirer of Ray. The films are now also available on VOD and home video with Japanese subtitles, with a Blu-ray release planned for March. Sandip Ray, the filmmaker’s son, noted that this international recognition reflects Ray’s timeless appeal and the deep impact of his work on global audiences.
