Robert Aramayo on portraying Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson in ‘I Swear’

British actor Robert Aramayo, known for roles in The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, described his latest role in the comedy-drama I Swear as the biggest challenge of his career. The film tells the story of John Davidson, who became an unexpected public figure for Tourette’s syndrome in 1989 after appearing in the documentary John’s Not Mad at age 16. Aramayo spent significant time with Davidson during filming, gaining valuable insight and guidance to portray him authentically. Davidson, now 54 and appointed MBE for his campaigning work, helped bring awareness of Tourette’s to the wider public over decades. Directed by Kirk Jones, the film also features Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson, and Peter Mullan, whom Aramayo described as ‘incredible actors’ that made working on the project both intimidating and inspiring. Returning to his hometown of Hull for a screening was a surreal experience for Aramayo, including seeing his former history teacher in the audience. He encouraged aspiring actors from Hull to pursue their ambitions, citing his positive experience with Hull Truck Theatre. I Swear opens in UK cinemas on 10 October, aiming to tell a heartfelt and truthful story about living with Tourette’s syndrome.
