The Voice of Hind Rajab Film Blocked in India Over Tensions in India-Israel Relations

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has blocked the release of the Oscar-nominated film *The Voice of Hind Rajab* in India, citing concerns that it could disrupt the country’s diplomatic ties with Israel. The film, directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, tells the true story of a five-year-old Palestinian girl, Hind Rajab, who was tragically killed during an Israeli airstrike in Gaza in 2024. Despite the film being released internationally in several countries, including the US, UK, and France, the CBFC argued that it was too sensitive for Indian audiences. Manoj Nandwana, the film’s distributor in India, argued that the film would not harm India-Israel relations and claimed that this decision was politically motivated. He also pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Israel and his firm support for Israel might have influenced the censorship decision. The film had been scheduled for release ahead of the 2026 Oscars but has now been referred to a revising committee. The controversy raises questions about the role of censorship in protecting international relations and the boundaries of free expression in India. While many other countries have cleared the film, the Indian government has yet to provide a clear explanation for its decision to block it.
