Ian McKellen Returns to Himself After Playing Falstaff

At 85 years old, renowned actor Ian McKellen undertook the iconic role of John Falstaff in a West End production of Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Parts I & II. To fully embody the character, McKellen allowed his hair and beard to grow for nearly a year. In June 2024, an on-stage accident forced him to leave the production mid-run, although the show continued for five more weeks without him. McKellen used this time to recover at home, waiting until the play concluded to fully step out of the Falstaff persona. On July 26, 2024, following 101 performances, he was photographed at home receiving a haircut that symbolized his return to his own identity. Photographer Frederic Aranda captured these intimate moments, documenting the physical and symbolic transformation from character back to actor.
