Animated Film ‘Tangles’ Acquired for Oscar Qualifying Run, Explores Family and Alzheimer’s

Independent Film Company (IFC) has acquired North American rights to the hand-drawn animated film ‘Tangles,’ marking its entry into the Oscar race. Directed by Leah Nelson, this debut feature premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival as an Official Selection Special Screening and received a standing ovation. The film, adapted from Leavitt’s graphic memoir, explores early-onset Alzheimer’s through a poignant and humorous lens, focusing on family dynamics and generational bonds. ‘Tangles’ will debut in select theaters later this year, expanding to wider release in early 2027. Its North American premiere is scheduled for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as part of the Centerpiece program. The film features a star-studded voice cast including Abbi Jacobson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, and Seth Rogen. IFC’s acquisition aligns with its growing portfolio of adult-driven, handcrafted animated films competing in the best animated feature category.
