Stormzy Founds Film Company to Spotlight Black British Stories, Stars in Debut Short

British rapper Stormzy has launched his own film production company, #Merkyfilm, which aims to highlight and celebrate Black British stories and talent. This new venture adds to his existing #Merky projects, including #MerkyBooks and #MerkyFC. The company’s first production is a short film titled ‘Big Man’, directed by Oscar-winner Aneil Karia. Stormzy plays the lead role of Tenzman, a former rap star finding purpose again through a relationship with two young boys. This marks Stormzy’s first time acting in a lead role, and the film is shot entirely on a smartphone. It will premiere on YouTube on June 18.

The film also features acting debuts by teenagers Klevis Brahja and Jaydon Eastman, who play Klevis and Tyrell, respectively. Stormzy describes the project as capturing the joy and spirit of youth and hopes it will inspire viewers to pursue big dreams. He says the creation of #Merkyfilm is a natural extension of his mission to create space for underrepresented voices. Future projects from the company will include a drama series, a mockumentary, an animation, and a biopic. Stormzy continues to expand his creative influence across industries while staying committed to uplifting his community.
