Stephen Colbert to Co-Write Upcoming ‘Lord of the Rings’ Film with Peter Jackson

After an 11-year tenure as host of ‘The Late Show,’ Stephen Colbert is set to transition from late-night television to blockbuster filmmaking. Colbert, a longtime fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, will co-write and help develop a new installment in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ franchise alongside director Peter Jackson. The film, tentatively titled ‘Shadow of the Past,’ will explore previously unused chapters from ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ offering a fresh perspective on the early events of the story. Colbert discussed the idea with his son, screenwriter Peter McGee, and together with Jackson and screenwriter Philippa Boyens, they have been shaping the narrative. Warner Bros. Discovery and New Line Cinema are producing the film, which is scheduled for release in 2027. Colbert announced this move shortly after CBS confirmed that the final episode of his late-night show will air on May 21, citing financial pressures. Known for his deep appreciation of Tolkien’s works, Colbert has previously engaged with the franchise in public events, including moderating a ‘Hobbit’ panel in full costume at Comic-Con. The collaboration promises to bring Colbert’s enthusiasm and unique perspective to the iconic fantasy series.
