HBO Max is expanding its library with a collection of 20 acclaimed Japanese films starting September 1, 2025. These films, licensed by GKIDS, include both anime and live-action titles, many of which are making their North American streaming debuts. Among the notable films are Makoto Shinkai’s ‘Your Name.’ in its 4K streaming debut, Hideaki Anno’s ‘Shin Godzilla,’ and Mamoru Oshii’s ‘Angel’s Egg.’ The addition of these films strengthens HBO Max’s anime content offering, following its previous acquisition of Studio Ghibli titles. The service is also tapping into its anime strategy with co-productions like ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.’ The new lineup will include works from renowned directors such as Satoshi Kon, Masaaki Yuasa, and Mamoru Hosoda, with many films scheduled to be available in 4K for the first time. This move reflects HBO Max’s aim to attract a more mature audience with its anime catalog, distancing itself from children’s content as part of broader changes under the leadership of David Zaslav. Additionally, several films will be making their North American streaming debut, further expanding access to iconic anime titles.
