Nia DaCosta and Tessa Thompson Reimagine Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler in a Postwar British Setting

Director Nia DaCosta, known for her work on the Marvel blockbuster The Marvels and the horror reboot Candyman, teams up again with actress Tessa Thompson to bring Henrik Ibsen’s complex character Hedda Gabler to the screen. Thompson portrays Hedda as a mixed-race, bisexual woman in 1950s Britain, emphasizing her manipulative, sultry, and conflicted nature. The film explores the pressures of societal expectations and the struggle for personal freedom, mirroring some contemporary challenges faced by women in Hollywood. DaCosta, who discovered Ibsen through A Doll’s House, was drawn to Hedda’s morally ambiguous character and the chance to reinterpret her for a modern audience.
