Sarajevo Film Festival Highlights Diverse Lineup with Focus on Female Filmmakers and International Collaborations

The Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF) is set to open on August 14, 2026, featuring Paweł Pawlikowski’s film *Fatherland*, which premiered at Cannes. Festival Director Jovan Marjanović emphasized the lineup’s ‘vibrant’ mix of regional and international cinema, highlighting a notable increase in female filmmakers. The festival will screen 51 films across four competition sections, including world premieres like Urša Menart’s *Everything That’s Wrong With You* and Dina Duma’s *Skateboarding Is Not For Girls*. Marjanović praised the balance between male and female directors, noting a two-year support program for women in cinema. The event also honors Béla Tarr’s legacy through a tribute program showcasing his former students’ works. International stars like Emily Watson, Woody Harrelson, and Asghar Farhadi will participate in masterclasses, though Marjanović stressed that the festival prioritizes meaningful connections over celebrity status. The SFF continues its mission of promoting regional cinema while addressing societal changes through its programming, rooted in its history as a symbol of resilience during the 1995 Siege of Sarajevo.
