Highlights from the 19th South African Film and Television Awards

The 19th South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) took place at the Gallagher Convention Centre, bringing together actors, directors, producers, and other industry professionals to recognise outstanding work in local film and television. The event celebrated performances, productions, and behind-the-scenes talent that contribute to South Africa’s screen culture. Notable wins included Zenande Mfenyana, who received her first Safta for best supporting actress in a telenovela for her role as Thumeka in Inimba, and Bonko Khoza, who won best actor in a telenovela for portraying twin brothers Banele and Sanele Magwaza in iThonga. Nelisiwe Sibiya also received recognition as best actress in a telenovela for her role as Zamahlobo in Ithonga. The awards highlighted the success of local productions, with Inimba particularly standing out for securing multiple accolades. Beyond the trophies, the Saftas reflected broader trends in the industry, including the growth of streaming platforms, international collaborations, and evolving production economics. The ceremony, postponed from 2025 due to organisational changes within the National Film and Video Foundation, emphasised collaboration and celebrated the collective effort behind filmmaking.
