Richard Gadd defends Baby Reindeer amid legal dispute over real-life inspiration

Richard Gadd has expressed that he remains proud of his autobiographical Netflix series Baby Reindeer despite a pending lawsuit from the woman who inspired one of its characters. The series, adapted from Gadd’s one-man stage show, follows Donny, an aspiring comedian, who is relentlessly harassed by Martha, a mentally ill woman he meets while working in a pub. Upon its April 2024 release, the seven-part drama quickly became a top 10 Netflix hit and sparked wide discussion. Controversy arose when viewers identified the real-life inspiration, Fiona Muir-Harvey, online, leading her to file a $170 million (£128 million) lawsuit against Netflix for defamation and negligence. Gadd, not named in the suit, filed a response supporting a motion to dismiss the claim. In interviews, he highlighted the positive societal impact of the series, noting significant increases in referrals to abuse and stalking charities. While he discouraged viewers from seeking out real-life figures, both he and Netflix faced criticism for insufficiently differentiating the characters from their real-world counterparts. Looking ahead, Gadd’s next project, the BBC drama Half Man, explores themes of trauma and fractured relationships but is not autobiographical. Gadd emphasises that he will continue to create from a place of authenticity, rather than fear of public opinion.
