Moviefone Relaunches with New Mobile App and TV Show to Attract Modern Viewers
Moviefone, the once-popular movie information service known for its iconic 777-FILM phone line in the 1990s, is relaunching under new ownership. As part of its 35th anniversary, the company has announced a private beta release of its new mobile app in May, with a public launch planned for this summer. The app will allow users to browse showtimes and buy tickets, view trending movies and TV shows, and access original content like celebrity interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. Alongside the app, Moviefone is also launching a nationally syndicated weekly TV series, Moviefone TV, set to air in the fall. The show is aimed at expanding the company’s original entertainment offerings and may air on the same networks as “Made in Hollywood,” though the official stations are yet to be confirmed. In an effort to appeal to a younger demographic, which makes up 80% of its user base, Moviefone will also feature social media influencers and expand to streaming and FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV) platforms. The relaunch is spearheaded by Cleveland O’Neal, known for producing “Made in Hollywood,” and follows Moviefone’s turbulent past, including its acquisition by AOL in 1999 and its later sale to the now-defunct Helios and Matheson Analytics. The brand hopes to find new life amid renewed interest in moviegoing and digital media.
