Pixar’s Hoppers: A wild ride with laughs but missing the emotional depth

Pixar’s latest animated feature, *Hoppers*, introduces audiences to a quirky adventure filled with adorable creatures, but it falls short of the emotional depth that fans have come to expect from the studio. The film follows Mabel Tanaka, an environmentalist college student, as she battles a corrupt mayor who wants to build a highway through a sacred glade, the place where Mabel bonded with her late grandmother. To stop the construction, Mabel must lure a beaver, an important environmental species, back to the glade. However, when Mabel finds the beaver, it’s not what it seems. The creature is a robot with a human mind inside. In a bizarre turn of events, Mabel mentally ‘hops’ into the robot and embarks on an unpredictable journey with an array of animal characters. Despite the fun and chaotic moments, *Hoppers* feels less personal and lacks the emotional punch typical of Pixar films. The animation style is more generic, and the story takes a broader, less autobiographical approach, which might disappoint long-time Pixar fans. The movie’s light-hearted tone, while entertaining, doesn’t fully capture the emotional complexity that Pixar is known for.
