Blumhouse to Produce Film Adaptation of Paranormal Horror Game ‘Phasmophobia’

Blumhouse, the production company renowned for its contributions to the horror genre, has announced plans to adapt the popular video game ‘Phasmophobia’ into a feature film. The news was revealed during the company’s inaugural event ‘The Business of Fear’ in Hollywood, where key figures like CEO Jason Blum, Atomic Monster’s James Wan, and horror analyst Stephen Follows spoke about the evolution and segmentation of the horror genre.

Released in 2020 by British indie developer Kinetic Games, ‘Phasmophobia’ has sold over 23 million copies worldwide. The game blends first-person investigation and survival mechanics, allowing players to identify different types of ghosts haunting various locations, either solo or in cooperative multiplayer mode.

Blumhouse will co-produce the adaptation alongside Atomic Monster and in association with Kinetic Games. This move aligns with Blumhouse’s ongoing strategy to leverage well-known horror IPs. The company also recently acquired the rights to the ‘Saw’ franchise and has an active film slate that includes sequels to ‘M3GAN’, ‘Black Phone’, and ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’.

A 2024 Blumhouse survey on horror subgenres highlighted the continued popularity of paranormal horror, reinforcing the strategic logic behind adapting ‘Phasmophobia’.
