Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, ‘One Battle After Another’, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, opened to a domestic box office of $22 million, marking Anderson’s highest debut and DiCaprio’s 11th movie to surpass $20 million in its opening weekend. The global total reached $48.3 million. The movie follows revolutionaries freeing immigration camps, robbing banks, and evading a nefarious colonel played by Sean Penn. Box office data from EntTelligence revealed that the film performed 13% above expectations in theaters located in blue counties and 24% below expectations in red counties, with overall attendance showing 72% from blue counties and 27% from red counties. Most theaters, 53%, are in blue counties, which contribute 66.8% of ticket sales. Unlike family-oriented movies like Disney’s ‘Snow White’, which tend to overperform in red areas, the R-rated action nature of ‘One Battle After Another’ appealed more to urban and liberal audiences. The movie did particularly well in large cities, exceeding other non-horror R-rated movies’ performance by 14% in populations over 1 million. Overperforming cities included New York (+22%), San Francisco (+21%), Washington, DC (+26%), and Toronto (+61%), while Houston (-30%) and Dallas (-23%) underperformed. In comparison, ‘American Sniper’ previously saw strong support in more conservative areas, highlighting how political and demographic factors can influence box office trends.
