Canadian TV series ‘Heated Rivalry’ becomes international success despite small budget

Heated Rivalry, a Canadian television adaptation of Rachel Reid’s novel about a queer romance between rival hockey players, has become a global phenomenon despite being produced on a modest budget of less than C$5 million per episode. The six-episode series was filmed in Ontario in just over a month and features mostly unknown actors, including Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams. Since its North American debut last November, the show has gained millions of fans, with Storrie hosting Saturday Night Live and Williams appearing with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Its penultimate episode tied the record for the highest-rated episode on IMDB alongside Breaking Bad. The series’ faithful adaptation of the source material, combined with active fan engagement and strategic promotion by Canadian streaming platform Crave, helped drive its success and secure international distribution via HBO Max and Sky. The production team prioritized casting based on talent rather than social media following, demonstrating that unknown actors can be propelled to stardom. The show has also boosted the careers of contributors, including composer Peter Peter and author Rachel Reid, whose audiobook listening increased by 1,500% globally. Series two is already commissioned, with hopes to continue promoting Canadian talent while maintaining the show’s creative freedom and unique storytelling style.
