Neill Blomkamp to Direct New ‘Starship Troopers’ Adaptation Based on Original Novel

Sony Pictures is developing a new adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel *Starship Troopers*, with Neill Blomkamp, known for *District 9*, set to write and direct. Unlike Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film, which satirized the book’s militaristic themes, this version aims to remain faithful to the original source material. Blomkamp will also produce the project alongside Terri Tatchell, his co-writer and wife. The novel follows Johnny Rico, a young soldier in an interstellar war against insect-like aliens, while also exploring themes of military service and citizenship. The 1997 adaptation, initially met with mixed reactions, has since gained cult status for its satirical approach. Blomkamp, who recently directed *Gran Turismo*, brings experience in blending human themes with sci-fi action, as seen in *District 9* and *Elysium*. Sony’s decision to return to Heinlein’s novel suggests a different tone from Verhoeven’s film, focusing more on the book’s core themes rather than satire. No release date or casting details have been announced yet.
