Matthew McConaughey Stars Alongside His Family in ‘The Lost Bus’, a Film About the California Wildfires

Matthew McConaughey takes on a pivotal role in ‘The Lost Bus,’ a gripping film based on the devastating 2018 California wildfires. In the movie, McConaughey portrays Kevin McKay, a school bus driver who must guide 22 children and their teacher through a raging inferno to safety. What’s even more unique is that McConaughey’s real-life family plays pivotal roles in the film. His 93-year-old mother, Mary Kathlene McConaughey, and his 17-year-old son, Levi, both appear as characters in the story. The movie focuses on the harrowing escape from the Sierra foothills after a power line sparked the catastrophic wildfires, which killed 85 people and displaced over 50,000 residents. Directed by Paul Greengrass, known for his work on real-life dramas like ‘Captain Phillips,’ the film is designed to be as realistic as possible, with a heavy emphasis on authentic locations and effects. The wildfires are not just a backdrop but arguably one of the film’s main characters. McConaughey’s son, Levi, got his role after persistently asking to audition, while his mother, despite health issues, auditioned and was cast in a key role. ‘The Lost Bus’ is both a tribute to the real-life heroes of the wildfire and a deeply personal project for McConaughey and his family. The film is now showing in cinemas and will be available on Apple TV+ from October 3rd.
