Release Dates Postponed for Upcoming Avengers Films: Doomsday and Secret Wars

Marvel Studios has announced delays to its upcoming Avengers films, shifting the timelines for two major installments in the franchise. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which will mark the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time portraying the antagonist Doctor Doom, has been rescheduled from May 1, 2026, to December 18, 2026. Its sequel, ‘Secret Wars’, is now slated for release on December 17, 2027, instead of the originally planned May 2 date of the same year. These delays come amid production challenges, notably the recasting and rewriting necessary after actor Jonathan Majors, initially intended to play a major role, was convicted of assault. Both films will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who are best known for helming the blockbuster hits ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’. The latter remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Marvel has faced difficulties replicating such box office success with more recent entries like ‘Eternals’, ‘Thunderbolts’, and sequels to ‘Thor’ and ‘Black Panther’. The franchise hopes to reignite interest with these new releases. Meanwhile, ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ is scheduled to premiere in July, directly competing with a new Superman film from DC Studios.
