Makemation explores how African youth use AI to shape their future

Makemation is a Nigerian feature film created by AI developer turned filmmaker Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji. The movie tells the story of Zara, a young girl who discovers how artificial intelligence can be used to uplift her community while challenging social barriers such as poverty, gender inequality and limited access to STEM education. Set in contemporary Nigeria, the film draws attention to how AI conversations can and should reflect African realities rather than being dominated by Western or Asian perspectives. After performing well in Nigerian cinemas in 2025, Makemation is now showing internationally and sparking discussions on how Africans, particularly young people, can be active creators of technology rather than passive consumers.
