Emma Thompson shares story of being asked out by Donald Trump on the day of her divorce

Emma Thompson, renowned actor, shared an interesting anecdote at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. She revealed that in 1998, on the same day her divorce from Kenneth Branagh was finalized, Donald Trump phoned her with an invitation to dinner. Thompson was filming ‘Primary Colors’ at the time when Trump made the call. Initially thinking it was a joke, she politely declined, stating she would get back to him. Thompson humorously reflected that, given the timing of her divorce, Trump might have been seeking out someone recently single for his social circle. She also joked that if she had accepted the invitation, she could have potentially altered American history. The conversation also delved into her iconic role in ‘Love Actually’, where she portrayed Karen, a character dealing with marital betrayal. Despite her admiration for the film, Thompson expressed surprise at its enduring popularity. She believes its emotional resonance, especially for women experiencing heartbreak, is one of the reasons for the movie’s lasting appeal.
