Jeremy Renner Denies Allegations of Involvement in Romance Scam Case

Marnie Reeves, a 56-year-old divorcée from Modesto, California, has filed a lawsuit alleging that Hollywood actor Jeremy Renner scammed her out of over $23,000 through what she claims was a romantic relationship. Reeves, recently divorced, said she initially contacted Renner on Instagram in April 2023 after he recovered from a near-fatal snowplough accident. She asserts that she then communicated via an unverified account, believing it to be Renner, and sent money for various ‘fan packages’ in order to maintain contact. Her 549-page complaint claims she also interacted with an account she thought belonged to Renner’s mother, who allegedly provided his personal phone number. Reeves claims she suffered significant mental and physical stress during this period, including loss of appetite, hair loss, and diminished self-worth. Renner has categorically denied any involvement, stating the interactions were the work of scammers using his identity and asserting that the lawsuit is entirely frivolous. His legal team also disputes Reeves’ claims regarding alleged family conspiracies. The case, which Reeves insists reflects genuine belief in a relationship, is scheduled for trial in August 2026. Renner’s attorneys are seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed, describing it as baseless litigation exploiting a misunderstanding of social media communications.
