Veteran actor James Tolkan, known for Back to the Future and Top Gun, dies aged 94

James Tolkan, the American actor best remembered for his portrayal of the strict school principal Mr Strickland in the ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy, has passed away at the age of 94. He died on Friday, 27 March, at his home in Lake Placid, New York, according to film co-creator Bob Gale, who shared the news with TMZ. Tolkan’s representative for public appearances, John Alcantar, confirmed his death and described him as a respected and fulfilled professional, though the cause of death has not been specified.

Tolkan became a familiar face in cinema during the 1980s, notably playing authority figures. Apart from his memorable role in ‘Back to the Future’, he portrayed Commander Stinger in the blockbuster ‘Top Gun’, where he shared scenes with Tom Cruise’s Maverick. Born in Michigan in 1931, Tolkan served in the US Navy during the Korean War before studying drama at the University of Iowa and later training at the legendary Actors Studio under Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.

His acting career spanned decades in both film and theatre. He was part of the original ensemble cast of David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’. His film credits include collaborations with esteemed directors such as Sidney Lumet (‘Serpico’, ‘Prince of the City’), John Badham (‘WarGames’), and Woody Allen (‘Love and Death’, where he portrayed Napoleon). Tolkan is survived by his wife, Parmelee, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage, marking the end of a long and distinguished career in American stage and screen art.
