James Gunn reinvents Lex Luthor as a mastermind in Superman

In the upcoming Superman movie, James Gunn offers a fresh take on Lex Luthor, presenting him not just as a power-hungry villain but as a brilliant mastermind. Luthor’s traditional lack of superpowers is addressed through his cunning intelligence and manipulative schemes. The movie portrays him as the orchestrator behind the Hammer of Boravia, a powerful entity created to fight Superman. Luthor’s strategy mirrors that of Marvel’s Mysterio, a villain from Spider-Man: Far From Home, who uses illusions and technology to deceive his enemies. Instead of battling Superman directly, Luthor uses his intellect to stage an elaborate fight, making Superman appear vulnerable. This version of Luthor is both patient and obsessive, having spent years studying Superman’s every move to find weaknesses. However, Luthor’s biggest oversight is underestimating Superman’s ability to inspire others, which ultimately leads to his defeat. Despite his failure, this Luthor is far from finished and is expected to play a larger role in the future of the DC Universe, potentially becoming the leader of the Legion of Doom.
