Jesse Armstrong Discusses the Fast-Tracked Production of HBO’s ‘Mountainhead’ and Its Satirical Take on Tech Billionaires

Jesse Armstrong, acclaimed creator of the Emmy-winning series ‘Succession,’ returns to HBO with his feature directing debut, ‘Mountainhead,’ a satirical TV movie about tech billionaires. Inspired by his research into the world of crypto and tech moguls, Armstrong crafted the story after reviewing a book on Sam Bankman-Fried and immersing himself in the unique voices of Silicon Valley’s elite. The plot centers on four billionaire friends who gather for a poker weekend as global chaos erupts due to a disruptive AI release from one of their companies. The production was remarkably swift: Armstrong pitched the idea to HBO in December, cast Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef, and Cory Michael Smith by January, and began filming in March in Park City, Utah. The entire process, from conception to completion, took just over six months—a rare feat in Hollywood. Armstrong wanted the film to capture the immediacy of current events, especially the influence of AI and social media, and to reflect the present ‘news consciousness.’ The cast and crew, many of whom were ‘Succession’ veterans, embraced the challenge of the tight schedule, motivated by Armstrong’s reputation and the timely subject matter. The film premieres on HBO and Max on May 31, coinciding with the Emmy eligibility deadline. ‘Mountainhead’ aims to be both a sharp satire of tech culture and a reflection on the rapid changes shaping society today.
